Party game · 4–20 players

Everyone gets the same word. Almost.

Halfword is a pass-and-play party game for one room, based on the word game Undercover. Most of the table shares a secret word, one or two players get a nearby one, and sometimes one gets nothing at all. Describe yours without saying it, then vote out whoever sounds off.

How a round works

First the deal: the phone goes round, and each player sees their word in secret. Then the table plays round after round until one side wins.

  1. Describe

One clue each, in turn. Never the word itself. Too vague looks suspicious, too exact gives it away.

  2. Discuss

Whose clue didn’t fit? Talk it over. Nobody says their word.

  3. Vote

On three, everyone points at a suspect, and the phone counts. A tie gets one more clue from each tied player, then a new vote.

  4. Out

The player with the most votes is out, and the phone shows what they were.

Caught Mr. White? They get one guess at the civilians’ word. If it’s right, they steal the win.

How it ends

  • Five cyan circles, the Civilians, huddled together under a burst of light

Civilians win when every Undercover and Mr. White is out.

  • A giant rose triangle and Mr. White’s empty square next to the smug Half, with the last Civilian cornered

Undercover and Mr. White win if they are still in when only one Civilian is left.

  • Mr. White’s empty square, saying the whole word in a speech bubble

Mr. White wins on the spot by naming the civilians’ word after being caught.

Three roles, three shapes

Nobody sees anyone else’s role. And colour is never the only clue: every role has its own shape.

  • The Civilian card: one big cyan circle among many small ones

    Civilian

    Circle, cyan

Gets the word most of the table shares. Wins by finding everyone who doesn’t have it.

  • The Undercover card: a tilted rose triangle hiding among rose dots

    Undercover

    Triangle, rose

Gets a nearby word: tea, while everyone else has coffee. Wins by blending in.

  • The Mr. White card: an empty square on a pale card

    Mr. White

    Hollow square, paper

Gets no word at all. Listens, bluffs, and if caught, gets one guess at the civilians’ word.

The app suggests how many Undercovers and Mr. Whites suit your group, and you can change it.

Eight special roles

Optional twists. Switch on any mix, and each one goes to a player on top of their role.

One phone, or everyone’s own

Play on one phone today. Later, everyone at the table will be able to use their own.

A phone that works without a connection, and the Half shrugging next to it

Now

Pass and play

One phone goes round the table, and the whole game runs on it.

  • Each player looks at their word alone, then passes the phone on.
  • No Wi-Fi, no mobile data, no account.
  • Scores add up over every game of the evening.
A card table set for a game, a card dealt at every seat, and the Half waiting

Coming later

Everyone’s own phone

One phone or tablet hosts the table. If a player’s phone drops out, they use the host’s screen and the game goes on.

  • Join by scanning the host’s QR code.
  • Phones on the same Wi-Fi talk to each other directly.
  • The rest go through an encrypted relay that can’t read a word.

Words written for each language

English and German word packs, each written on its own and never translated. Pairs rarely survive translation: clock and watch make a fine English pair, but German has Uhr for both.

Pick a difficulty from 1 to 5, and pairs your table played lately are skipped. The app’s language and the word language are set separately.

What happens at the table stays there

No account. Names, words and scores stay on your phones. Game statistics are off unless you turn them on, and even then they carry no names, nothing anyone typed and no device ID.
